We talk to a lot of customers who have crank handles on their windows. They often ask us, if they buy our cellular shades, will it interfere with them? This is a very good question, especially if you’re going to make an investment in our window treatments. In this post, we’ll shed some light on chosing the right window blind for your casement windows.
The best way to mount a shade (in our opinion), is by doing it with an inside mount that sits within the window’s frame. Every shade has a minimum depth requirement in order to mount it as an inside mount. This means a flat depth that’s all the way around the window frame so the shade can raise and lower without an interruption. One of the largest culprits for interference for these actions is window locks and crank handles. Lets look at each crank type in a casement window and help you decide which window treatment is right for you.

If you look at Figure 1, this is a regular crank handle that is protruding into the window frame space. In this particular situation, there likely is enough space to have the window shade rest snugly against the window’s sill. If you want to find out if you have enough space, take a ruler or measuring tape and measure the sill to the front edge to where the handle begins. You need to make sure that you have no other protrusions like window locks featured on top of the window frame.

Last but not least, have a look at Figure 3. This is actually the T-Handle in my kitchen! Since I’m on a budget and do not feel like replacing my windows, an easy solution would be to mount my shades as an outside mount.
