Cellular shades, also called honeycomb shades, are designed with air pockets that create an insulating layer between your room and the window. This makes them particularly useful when you want a window treatment that can improve comfort while also providing privacy and control over incoming light.

Light-Filtering vs. Blackout Cellular Shades

Light-filtering cellular fabrics allow a soft glow of natural light into the room while maintaining privacy. They are the most common choice for living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, home offices, and other spaces where daylight is desirable.

Blackout or room-darkening cellular fabrics block 99% of light through the fabric and provide complete privacy. They are particularly well suited to bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, and other spaces where greater darkness is a priority. Some light can still enter around the edges of the installed shade.

Single-Cell vs. Cell-in-Cell Honeycomb Fabric

Single-cell and cell-in-cell fabrics have the same modern 3/4-inch pleat appearance but differ slightly in construction and insulating performance.

• Single-cell fabric uses one honeycomb air pocket and is lighter in weight and somewhat less expensive.
• Cell-in-cell fabric contains a smaller honeycomb cell inside the larger cell, creating an additional insulating air pocket and somewhat greater thermal performance.

Which Cellular Shade Operating Style Should I Choose?

Cordless cellular shades provide a clean appearance without exposed operational cords and are a strong choice for most standard-size windows.

Continuous cord loop cellular shades use a clutch-and-pulley system and are particularly well suited to large or heavier shades. They offer some of the largest available size ranges in the EcoSmart cellular collection.

Twin pull cellular shades place the operating cords inside metal wands, combining manual operation with an award-winning safety design.

Motorized cellular shades use rechargeable MotionBlinds motors and can be operated with an attached wand, remote control, or smartphone app. An optional Wi-Fi bridge adds additional automation and smart-home capabilities.

What Is Top-Down/Bottom-Up Operation?

A top-down/bottom-up cellular shade can be raised from the bottom like a traditional shade while also allowing the top of the shade to be lowered. This gives you greater control over the balance between daylight and privacy.

For example, you can cover the lower portion of a street-facing window for privacy while leaving the top open to natural light. Top-down/bottom-up operation is available with cordless, cord loop, twin pull, and motorized cellular shade configurations.

Are Cellular Shades Good for Insulation?

Yes. The honeycomb shape of cellular fabric traps air within the shade, creating an additional insulating layer at the window. EcoSmart’s cell-in-cell fabrics provide somewhat greater insulation than single-cell fabrics, while room-darkening fabrics provide the greatest insulation within the cellular fabric collection.
