Top-Down/Bottom-Up Cellular Shades for Privacy and Natural Light

Top-down/bottom-up cellular shades are designed for rooms where privacy and daylight need to work together. Unlike a traditional bottom-up shade that only raises from the bottom rail, a top-down/bottom-up shade can also lower from the top of the window.

That extra movement gives you more ways to position the shade throughout the day. You can cover the lower half of a street-facing window while keeping the upper portion open, lower the shade from the top to reduce glare without blocking the entire view, or close the shade completely when you want maximum privacy.

How Do Top-Down/Bottom-Up Shades Work?

A top-down/bottom-up shade has independently adjustable upper and lower rails. Depending on the operating style you choose, those rails can be moved manually, with continuous cord loops, with enclosed pull wands, or with motorized controls.

The basic idea is simple:

• Raise the bottom rail to uncover the window from below.
• Lower the upper rail to uncover the window from above.
• Adjust both rails to cover only the middle or lower portion of the window.
• Close both rails completely when you want full window coverage.

This flexibility is why top-down shades are especially popular on windows where you want daylight without giving up privacy.

The biggest advantage is control. A standard bottom-up shade requires you to expose the lower part of the window first, which may also expose the interior of the room. A top-down/bottom-up shade lets you bring light in from above while keeping the lower portion of the glass covered.

Light-Filtering or Blackout Top-Down/Bottom-Up Shades?

The operating system determines how you position the shade. The fabric determines how much light passes through it.

Light-Filtering Top-Down/Bottom-Up Shades

Light-filtering cellular fabric allows a soft glow of natural light into the room while preventing a clear view through the shade. Combined with top-down/bottom-up operation, it provides excellent flexibility for living rooms, dining rooms, bathrooms, home offices, and other spaces where privacy matters but you still want the room to feel bright.

Light-filtering fabric is translucent rather than transparent. Under certain nighttime lighting conditions, a strongly backlit person or object may create a visible silhouette from outside.

Blackout Top-Down/Bottom-Up Shades

Blackout cellular fabric is designed for substantially greater room darkening and complete privacy through the material. It is a strong choice for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, and other spaces where reducing incoming light is a priority.

The fabric itself blocks nearly all incoming light, but small gaps around the perimeter of an installed shade can still allow some light into the room.

Top-Down/Bottom-Up Shades Are Also Insulating

Privacy flexibility is the feature that makes top-down/bottom-up shades different, but the honeycomb fabric still provides the insulating benefits of a cellular shade.

The cellular structure creates pockets of trapped air between the room and the glass, helping reduce heat transfer through the window. This can improve comfort during both hot and cold weather.

Depending on the shade and operating system, you may be able to choose between single-cell and cell-in-cell fabric. Cell-in-cell construction creates an additional insulating air pocket and provides somewhat greater thermal performance.

Can You Add Side Tracks to Top-Down/Bottom-Up Shades?

Compatible inside-mounted cellular shades can be upgraded with EcoSmart Cellular Side Tracks.

Side tracks cover the narrow gaps along the sides of the shade and can help reduce airflow around the fabric. On blackout shades, they can also reduce some of the light that would otherwise enter along the side edges.

Compatibility depends on the shade configuration and window dimensions, so review the side-track requirements before adding them to your order.
