Motorized window shades are window shades equipped with a built-in motor that allows them to be opened, closed, or adjusted using a remote control, smartphone app, attached wand, or via timer.

At EcoSmart, we offer motorized options for both our cellular and roller shades. Both styles are a popular choice for homeowners looking to combine convenience, safety, and style in their living spaces.

Whether you’re considering upgrading your home’s window shades or you’re curious about the features and benefits of motorized shades, we’ve got you covered. Here are answers to some of the Internet’s most pressing questions:

Why Choose Motorized Shades?

Whether you’re looking for window shades for hard-to-reach places, like for windows that are particularly high or blocked by appliances, or simply prefer the convenience of a remote or timer, motorized shades offer a perfect blend of functionality and ease of use.

How Do Motorized Shades Work?

If you’re looking for a motorized shade demonstration, today’s you’re lucky day! Below, a member of our team demonstrates how to operate EcoSmart Motorized Shades with a remote:

How Long Do Motorized Shades Last?

Motorized shades are designed to be durable and long-lasting. On average, you can expect them to last anywhere from 5 to 10 years, depending on the quality of the motor, the frequency of use, and proper maintenance.

What is the Difference Between Motorized and Automated Shades?

While the terms are often used interchangeably, there’s technically a key difference:

Motorized Shades are operated via a remote, wall switch, or app, while Automated Shades take things a step further by integrating with smart home systems to adjust based on time, sunlight, or other triggers, making them entirely hands-free. For convenience, we refer to all of our motorized and automated shades as simply “motorized,” even though they all have the ability to integrate with smart home systems like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Samsung SmartThings for customizable automation.

Can Motorized Shades Be Operated Manually?

In most cases, motorized shades cannot be operated manually. However, some models are equipped with a manual override feature, allowing you to adjust them in case of power outages or motor issues.

Are Motorized Shades Hard to Install?

Installing and/or configuring EcoSmart Motorized Shades and accessories is much easier than you might think. For starters, we do most of the work for you. Your remote(s) will come pre-programmed to operate your shades, and your shades will be pre-programmed to stop at the appropriate fully-open and fully-closed positions. In fact, you won’t need to do much at all – unless you decide to make changes to the existing programming later.

How Are Motorized Shades Powered?

Choose from battery power, plug-in power supply, and hard wiring to power your motorized shades. For additional context, we included a bit more about each option below:

Integrated, Rechargeable Lithium Battery: The battery for our shades is built right into the motor. Depending on the size of your motorized shade and the frequency of use, the battery can power the blind for up to 6-12 months between charges. When it does need to be charged, simply connect our charging cable to the battery and plug the other end into a power outlet.

Plug-in Power Supply: If you have a power outlet near your window, this is as easy as it gets. Your shade will remain permanently plugged into the outlet, and you’ll never have to worry about recharging. The cord from the motor to the outlet is relatively thin to reduce visibility, and power usage is minimal.

Hard Wiring: Usually best during new construction, this allows you to run wiring inside your walls, eliminating most cord visibility. However, as this extends beyond the DIY spirit of our Internet offerings and service for most residential customers, we highly recommend involving an electrician, and our ability to advise and assist will be limited.
