At EcoSmart Shades, we spend a lot of time chatting with our customers about the style of shade that’s right for their space. But in our opinion, there are a lot of factors that go into choosing the right shade, including color.
Something we don’t talk about enough is the variety of colors we have available in both our cellular and roller shades. Below, we offer some advice on choosing the right color for your space, as well as answers to some FAQs. Let’s get into it.
Matching vs. Complementing: Which Approach is Better?

Oftentimes, we chat with folks looking for shades that exactly match the color of their trim, wall paint, or woodwork. However, in our opinion, this approach to color often leads to frustration.
Finding an exact match is nearly impossible, and even if you do, other factors— like lighting changes and natural fading over time— can affect how the shade color looks in your space.
Instead of trying to match, we encourage choosing a complementary shade color. This approach offers more flexibility and makes sure your window coverings remain in style– even as you update the rest of your home.
Here are a few more reasons we think complementary shade colors are better:
- Exact matches are tricky: Even if a shade seems perfect at first, slight differences in material and finish can make it look off.
- Your shades are an investment: They should work well with your space for years to come, even if you decide to repaint or update your decor.
- Neutral colors work across styles: We offer a range of neutral tones that complement different home aesthetics, ensuring versatility.
- Color is personal: Everyone’s preference is different, which is why we always recommend ordering fabric samples before making a final decision. Computer screens aren’t always reliable for color accuracy!
Cellular Shade Color Options

Our cellular shade offerings are available in a variety of neutral tones, but we also offer special order options for those who want something bolder. For example, one customer requested black cellular shades for a bedroom, and we were able to accommodate their needs!
If you’re looking for something with natural texture, be sure to take a look at our bamboo or linen-inspired cellular shades for added warmth and depth. These options are available under “fabric type” when you’re customizing your order.
Roller Shade Color Options

Roller shades follow the same color principles as cellular shades, but they also come in designer fabrics with textured finishes, called “Balmoral,” adding an upscale touch to your space. We’re particularly partial to the “pearl” colorway, but all of the colors in the Balmoral collection offer subtle natural colors that complement a range of interior design styles.
Hardware Color Matters, Too
Your window shade color isn’t the only factor to consider— hardware plays a role as well! While rail color choices are more limited, we’ve selected hardware options that coordinate beautifully with a range of shade colors.
Since color can appear differently on a screen versus in person, we always recommend ordering fabric samples before making a final decision on the color of your shades. Seeing the material in your space and under your lighting conditions, will help you confidently choose the perfect shade color for your home.
