1. Chain Tensioner Placement: Side or Front?

One of the questions we’re commonly asked by customers is: should the chain tensioner be on the side or front of the window frame? Our answer is: it doesn’t matter! The chain tensioner can be mounted on the side of the window frame or the front. The best choice depends on two things:
- Window depth: If your window frame is shallow, a side mount might be more secure and less obtrusive.
- Personal preference: Some people simply like the cleaner look of a front-mounted tensioner, while others prefer the chain to be tucked discreetly to the side.
Above, you can see an example of a chain tensioner on the side of the window frame vs. the front. While this customer ordered the exact same size shade for almost identical windows, the depth of the window frame on the second window was much shallower, making it more convenient and aesthetically pleasing to place the tensioner on that window in the front.
2. Ball Stops: Top and Bottom Chain Markers

Ball stops are small beads on the control chain that stop the shade at just the right height. You’ll want to place one at the top and one at the bottom:
- The top stop prevents the shade from rolling too far up into the headrail.
- The bottom stop stops it at your desired closed position so the fabric stays taut and aligned.
This simple adjustment can make a big difference in how your shade functions day-to-day.
