You’ve already prepped your windows and read our installation tips for cellular shades, but what about getting your measurements right in the first place? Measuring may seem straightforward, but a few small details— like bracket size or wide window planning— can make a big difference in the final fit and function of your shades.

In this post, we’re diving into the measuring tips that’ll help you avoid common pitfalls and get the perfect fit– the first time.

1. Bracket Size Matters

Before you break out the measuring tape, there’s one thing you absolutely need to know: the size of the bracket. This small piece of hardware plays a big role in determining how your shade fits in the window frame, especially for inside mounts.

Not sure what size your bracket will be? We’re happy to send you one in advance so you can measure with confidence. Just reach out to our team to request the bracket that goes with your desired style of shade.

2. Measuring for Super-Wide Windows

Got a wide window? Here’s something to consider: shades over 96 inches wide come with extra shipping costs and often don’t last as long due to additional strain on their components.

That’s why many customers choose to install two or more shades side by side instead. This not only makes them easier to manage and install but also helps your shades last longer. Additionally, it gives our customers extra flexibility when it comes to light control, as one side can be raised while the other is lowered, and vice versa.

How to Measure for Multiple Shades:

  • Outside Mount: Measure the full width you want to cover and divide by 2 (or however many shades you’re using). Be sure to account for any gaps between shades or overlap.
  • Inside Mount: Same rule—measure the full interior width and divide accordingly.

We’re always happy to help you plan this out if you’re unsure! Simply reach out to our team with your desired measurements, and we’ll help you do the math.

3. Should I Include Trim in My Measurements?

This question is all about personal preference. Some customers want their outside mount shades to cover the window trim entirely, while others prefer to leave it exposed. Think about how you want the final look to appear— and then measure accordingly. There’s no wrong answer!

4. New Construction? Still Measure Every Window

We get this question all the time: “If my house is new, can I just measure one window and assume the rest are the same?”

Unfortunately, no. Even in brand-new homes, window openings can vary by as much as half an inch. We strongly recommend measuring each window individually to avoid costly adjustments later on.

5. What Is a Shallow Mount Shade?

A shallow mount is when there’s not enough depth in the window frame to install the entire shade flush inside the opening. This often occurs in older homes or windows with obstructions like crank handles.

In these cases:

  • The shade may extend slightly into the room.
  • Make sure to measure the depth of your window frame carefully before choosing inside vs. outside mount.
