Roller shades are one of the most versatile window treatments out there— they’re sleek, modern, and easy to use.
But when it comes to measuring for a perfect fit, there are a few quirks to keep in mind that set roller shades apart from other styles (we’re looking at you, fabric width and roll direction).
Whether you’re mounting inside or out, covering wide or shallow windows, or trying to achieve total blackout, a few tips from the experts can go a long way.
Here’s what to know before you measure— so your shades fit and function just the way you want them to.
1. Can I get reverse roll? What does that mean?

Yes! You can choose standard roll (where the fabric rolls off the back and hugs the window) or reverse roll (where the fabric comes over the top and away from the window).
Reverse roll is especially useful if:
- You want to clear window handles or trim
- You prefer a cleaner look (hides the roller tube)
- You’re doing an inside mount but want the fabric to sit farther forward
Just remember: reverse roll slightly changes the projection and how much space you need, so measure carefully and let us know your preference when ordering.
2. Do roller shades work for shallow windows?
Yes— but like cellular shades, the depth of your window matters. For an inside mount, you’ll want at least 2 to 2.5 inches of depth for a flush fit. If your windows are shallower:
- You can do a partial inside mount (shade will protrude slightly)
- Or go with an outside mount, which avoids depth issues entirely

3. Can I just measure one window in a room if they all look the same?

It’s tempting, but nope— we don’t recommend it. Even in newer homes, window openings can vary slightly due to settling or framing. Always measure each window individually, even if they look identical.
Measuring for roller shades doesn’t have to be complicated— but it does require a little extra attention to detail. If you’re unsure about any part of the process, be sure to reach out to our team of Shade Gurus for additional support.
