Why Choose Cordless Top-Down/Bottom-Up Blackout Shades?

Top-down/bottom-up operation gives you more flexibility than a traditional shade because you can independently control which portion of the window is covered.

On a bedroom or street-facing window, for example, you can keep the lower portion covered for privacy while lowering the middle rail to bring daylight in from above. When it is time to darken the room, simply close the shade completely.

How Does Cordless Top-Down/Bottom-Up Operation Work?

A small handle on the bottom rail lets you raise and lower the entire shade like a traditional cordless cellular shade. A second handle on the middle rail lets you lower or raise the top portion independently.

Because there are no external operating cords, the window maintains a clean appearance and the shade avoids the cord-entanglement concerns associated with traditional operating cords.

EcoSmart recommends contacting us before choosing a cordless shade for a window wider or taller than 72 inches. For larger windows, another operating system may provide easier everyday operation.

Compare cordless, continuous cord loop, twin pull, and motorized options in our Cellular Shade Styles guide.

How Dark Are Blackout Cellular Shades?

EcoSmart room-darkening cellular fabrics block 99% of incoming light through the fabric and provide complete privacy. This makes them particularly well suited to bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, and other spaces where reducing daylight is important.

The entire window will not become completely light-tight, however. Small gaps around the four edges of an installed cellular shade allow some light to enter even though the fabric itself is blocking nearly all incoming light.

Learn more about light-filtering and room-darkening materials in our Cellular Fabric guide.

Add Side Tracks for Greater Light Control and Insulation

For compatible inside-mounted installations, EcoSmart Cellular Side Tracks can cover the narrow gaps along the sides of the shade.

This can help reduce both edge light and airflow between the room and window, improving room darkening and thermal performance. Side tracks require sufficient flat mounting space inside the window frame and are available for shades up to 94 inches high.

Blackout or Light Filtering?

Choose this blackout version when darkness and complete privacy through the fabric are priorities. It is particularly useful for sleeping spaces, media rooms, and windows where nighttime privacy matters.

If you want the same cordless top-down/bottom-up operation while allowing soft natural light into the room, choose Cordless Top-Down/Bottom-Up Light-Filtering Cellular Window Shades.

Do You Need Top-Down/Bottom-Up Operation?

Choose top-down/bottom-up when you want to cover the lower portion of the window without blocking the entire opening. It is especially useful for street-facing rooms, closely spaced homes, bedrooms, and other spaces where privacy and natural light need to be balanced.

If you only need traditional bottom-up operation, Cordless Blackout Cellular Window Shades provide the same basic room-darkening and cordless benefits in a simpler configuration.

If you want top-down/bottom-up positioning on a larger window, compare Continuous Cord Loop Top-Down/Bottom-Up Blackout Cellular Window Shades.

For automated operation, consider Motorized Top-Down/Bottom-Up Blackout Cellular Window Shades.

Is This the Right Shade for Your Window?

Choose this configuration when you want:

  • Cordless operation with no external operating cords
  • Top-down/bottom-up control for greater privacy flexibility
  • Blackout fabric for stronger room darkening and complete privacy through the material
  • Cellular insulation to help reduce heat transfer at the window
  • Manual operation without the additional cost or technology of motorization

For very large or difficult-to-reach windows, a continuous cord loop or motorized operating system may be a better fit.
