Choose the Right Roller Shade Fabric
The biggest decision when configuring a motorized roller shade is how much light, privacy, and exterior visibility you want. EcoSmart offers multiple fabric transparencies so you can tailor each shade to the room rather than using the same material throughout your home.
1% open fabric provides the greatest privacy among EcoSmart’s light-filtering solar fabrics while still allowing some natural light and exterior visibility.
3% and 5% open fabrics provide a middle ground between glare reduction, natural light, exterior views, and daytime privacy.
10% open fabric is the most transparent option and works well when maintaining the view is a priority.
0% open room-darkening fabric is opaque and blocks more than 99% of incoming light through the material while providing complete privacy.
See the full range of colors, materials, and transparency options in our roller shade fabric guide.
Why Choose Motorized Roller Shades?
Motorization is particularly useful for large windows, high or hard-to-reach windows, and rooms with several shades that you want to operate together. Instead of manually adjusting each shade, you can raise and lower them with a remote or add smart controls for scheduled and app-based operation.
Motorized roller shades also eliminate operational cords and chains. When raised, the fabric rolls compactly above the window, giving roller shades the minimalist appearance that makes them especially popular in contemporary interiors.

Remote Control or Smart-Home Automation?
A remote control is all you need for basic motorized operation. Choose a 1-channel remote for a single shade or a 15-channel remote when you want to operate multiple shades individually or in groups.
Adding the optional Wi-Fi hub allows you to control your shades from a smartphone, create automatic opening and closing schedules, and integrate compatible shades with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit.
Motorized roller shades can be powered by either a built-in rechargeable battery or plug-in transformer. Optional solar charging is also available for battery-powered installations.
Are Motorized Roller Shades Good for Large Windows?
Yes. Motorized roller shades can be made up to 102 inches wide and 144 inches high, making them a strong option for many larger windows. Motorization also eliminates the effort required to manually raise and lower a large shade.
Before ordering, review our roller shade measuring instructions to determine the correct dimensions and mounting requirements for your window.
Light-Filtering or Blackout Motorized Roller Shades?
Choose light-filtering motorized roller shades when controlling glare and sunlight while preserving some natural light or exterior visibility is the priority. They work especially well in living rooms, kitchens, offices, dining rooms, and sunrooms.
Choose blackout motorized roller shades when privacy and room darkening are more important. They are particularly useful for bedrooms and media rooms where reducing incoming light is the goal. Keep in mind that while the blackout fabric itself blocks more than 99% of light, small gaps around the edges of a roller shade can still allow some light into the room.
Roller Shades vs. Motorized Cellular Shades
Roller shades are a strong choice when your priorities include a sleek appearance, large-window coverage, durability, glare control, and preserving exterior views with solar fabric.
If maximum window insulation and energy efficiency are more important, consider Motorized Cellular Shades. Their honeycomb construction traps air at the window and provides greater insulating performance than roller fabric.
Customize Your Motorized Roller Shades
Your shade can be configured beyond fabric color and dimensions. Depending on the installation and look you want, options include:
- Standard or reverse roll direction
- Integrated rechargeable battery or plug-in power
- Remote or smart-home controls
- Painted metal or fabric-wrapped fascia
- Painted metal or fabric-wrapped cassette
- Multiple hardware finishes
- Optional solar battery charging
A fascia or cassette hides the roller and mounting hardware to create a more finished appearance at the top of the window.
