Why Choose Cordless Top-Down/Bottom-Up Cellular Shades?
Top-down/bottom-up operation lets you control which portion of the window is covered instead of simply raising a shade from the bottom.
On a street-facing window, for example, you can keep the lower section covered for privacy while opening the top to daylight. In a bathroom, home office, or living room, you can adjust the shade throughout the day as your privacy and lighting needs change.

How Does Cordless Top-Down/Bottom-Up Operation Work?
A small handle on the bottom rail lets you raise and lower the entire shade like a traditional cordless cellular shade. A second handle on the middle rail lets you independently lower or raise the top portion.
There are no exposed operational cords, giving the window a clean appearance and eliminating the cord-entanglement concerns associated with traditional pull cords.
Cordless shades are best suited to all but the largest windows. EcoSmart recommends contacting us before choosing this operating system when either the width or height exceeds 72 inches.

How Much Privacy Do Light-Filtering Cellular Shades Provide?
Light-filtering cellular fabric is translucent rather than transparent. It allows a soft glow of natural light into the room without providing a clear view through the shade.
In most situations, this provides excellent privacy. However, a person or object directly between a strong interior light source and the shade may create a visible silhouette from outside, particularly with lighter fabric colors.
For bedrooms or other rooms where complete opacity and greater darkness are priorities, consider Cordless Top-Down/Bottom-Up Blackout Cellular Window Shades.
Learn more about the differences between translucent and room-darkening materials in our Cellular Fabric guide.
Are Light-Filtering Cellular Shades Energy Efficient?
Yes. Cellular fabric is formed into honeycomb-shaped air pockets that create an insulating layer between the room and window. This helps reduce heat transfer in both cold and warm weather while still allowing daylight into the room.
Light-filtering cellular shades are a particularly good fit when you want greater window insulation without making the room feel dark.

Add Side Tracks for Greater Insulation
Compatible inside-mounted shades can be upgraded with EcoSmart Cellular Side Tracks.
The tracks cover the narrow gaps between the sides of the shade and window frame, helping reduce airflow around the fabric. This can improve the overall insulating performance of the window treatment.
Light Filtering or Blackout?
Choose light-filtering fabric when maintaining natural daylight is important. It works especially well in living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices where you want privacy without significantly darkening the space.
Choose blackout fabric when darkness and complete opacity are more important, particularly in bedrooms, nurseries, and media rooms.
If you want the same cordless top-down/bottom-up functionality with stronger light blocking, choose Cordless Top-Down/Bottom-Up Blackout Cellular Window Shades.
Do You Need Top-Down/Bottom-Up Operation?
Top-down/bottom-up operation is especially useful when privacy and natural light need to coexist.
It can be a great choice for:
- Street-facing windows
- First-floor living spaces
- Bathrooms
- Home offices
- Closely spaced homes
- Windows where you want privacy below eye level without covering the entire window
If you only need traditional bottom-up operation, Cordless Light-Filtering Cellular Window Shades provide the same basic cordless operation and translucent fabric in a simpler configuration.
What if You Have a Larger Window?
Cordless top-down/bottom-up shades can be made up to 84 inches wide and 84 inches high, but EcoSmart recommends consulting with us when either dimension exceeds 72 inches.
For larger or heavier windows, consider Continuous Cord Loop Top-Down/Bottom-Up Light-Filtering Cellular Window Shades. The clutch-and-pulley operating system is designed to handle larger shades smoothly.
For hard-to-reach windows or automated control, compare Motorized Top-Down/Bottom-Up Light-Filtering Cellular Window Shades.
Is This the Right Shade for Your Window?
Choose this configuration when you want:
- Cordless operation with no exposed operating cords
- Top-down/bottom-up positioning for flexible privacy control
- Light-filtering fabric that keeps the room bright while preventing a clear view through the shade
- Cellular insulation to help reduce heat transfer through the window
- Simple manual operation without motors, remotes, or external cord loops
For very large or difficult-to-reach windows, a continuous cord loop or motorized system may be a better fit.

Now you see it – now you don’t and everything in between.
Exactly what I wanted for a shade on my window with all degrees of up/down. I purposely did not include the transom in the shade height, chose to keep it open. The shade is a quality product in both function and materials. You hardly notice the cords of my bottom/up top/down shade.
From ordering samples to asking questions, the staff was very responsive and thorough. I was amazed how quickly I received my well packaged order.
While I didn’t actually install the shade my builder guy was very impressed with ease of assembly and detailed instructions. Took him 20 minutes tops.
I will be ordering shades for other rooms in my house. EcoSmart will be my provider hands down.
Thank you for helping my bedroom look fabulous.
