Why Choose Motorized Blackout Roller Shades?

Motorized blackout roller shades are a strong choice when you want room darkening without giving up the simple, low-profile appearance of a roller shade. Because the fabric rolls neatly onto the tube above the window, the shade has a clean appearance when raised and can accommodate windows up to 102 inches wide and 144 inches high.

Motorization also makes these shades particularly useful on large or difficult-to-reach windows. Choose simple remote operation or add the optional Wi-Fi hub when you want to operate shades from your phone, create opening and closing schedules, or incorporate them into a compatible smart-home system.

How Much Light Do Blackout Roller Shades Block?

EcoSmart room-darkening roller fabrics are 0% open and block more than 99% of incoming light while providing complete privacy through the fabric. They are an excellent option for bedrooms, media rooms, and spaces where reducing daylight and nighttime visibility is important.

However, a blackout roller shade does not create a completely light-tight window. The roller system is wider than the fabric itself, which creates small gaps along the edges where some light can enter. If absolute darkness is your primary goal, consider how the shade will be mounted and whether additional window coverings may be appropriate.

Battery-Powered or Plug-In Motorization?

Choose an integrated rechargeable battery when you want motorization without running a permanent power cord to the window. The rechargeable battery is built into the roller system for a cleaner installation.

Choose a plug-in transformer when an electrical outlet is conveniently located near the window and you prefer continuous power. Optional extension cables are available for installations that require additional reach.

Smart Roller Shade Controls

Motorized roller shades can be operated with a remote control without adding smart-home equipment. A 1-channel remote can control an individual shade, while a 15-channel remote can operate multiple shades individually or in groups.

Adding the optional Wi-Fi hub expands those capabilities to smartphone control, automated schedules, and compatible smart-home platforms including Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. This can be particularly useful when multiple shades are installed throughout a room or home.

Are Motorized Blackout Roller Shades Right for Every Window?

These shades are a particularly good fit when you want a modern appearance, strong privacy, room darkening, automation, or coverage for a larger window.

If insulation and energy efficiency are your highest priorities, consider Motorized Blackout Cellular Window Shades instead. Cellular fabric uses honeycomb-shaped air pockets to create an additional insulating layer at the window, while roller shades are primarily designed around durability, light control, and a streamlined appearance.

If you like the appearance of roller shades but want natural light to enter the room, consider Motorized Light-Filtering Roller Shades instead.

Customize the Look

Your shade can be configured beyond its fabric color and dimensions. Depending on your installation, you can choose standard or reverse roll direction, hardware finishes, motor location, and optional fascia or cassette treatments.

A fascia or cassette conceals the roller and hardware at the top of the window for a more finished appearance. Select painted metal for a clean architectural look or a fabric-wrapped option that coordinates with the shade itself.

Before You Order

  • Choose blackout roller fabric when privacy and room darkening are priorities.
  • Choose battery power when you want to avoid a permanent power connection at the window.
  • Choose plug-in power when an outlet is readily available and continuous power is preferred.
  • Add the Wi-Fi hub if app control, schedules, or smart-home integration are important.
  • Consider a fascia or cassette if you want the roller and mounting hardware concealed.
  • Order free roller fabric samples to compare colors and textures in your own space before configuring your shades.
